Doug Mataconis looks into McCain’s repeated references to Joe Wurzelbacher: “Obviously, McCain was trying to connect with middle America and convince them that Barack Obama woud raise their taxes, eviscerate their health care, and god knows what he would do to the nation’s plumbing system.”
Justin Gardner comments, “Sure, there’s another debate to go, but the Ayers story will die because McCain provided no oxygen tonight, and that’s all the Arizona Senator had left.”
Alan Stewart Carl writes, “Here’s the question I would really like to hear asked of Obama tonight: If Congress sends you a bill that raises taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 a year, will you veto that bill, even if the rest of the legislation is acceptable? The directness of Obama’s answer will tell us how serious he is about cutting most of our taxes.”
Nick Ragone suggests, “If the race was a dead-heat, Palin would be able to play defense and simply rope-a-dope her way through the debate. However, with McCain trailing badly, he actually needs her to go on the offensive and score points. It won’t be enough for her to just survive and look adequate.”
Justin Gardner reports, “Today we have another poll from Marist University that finds Dems supporting it to go on and Repubs supporting a postponement. … That’s why I’m focusing on Independents, because 53% of them want to see it happen, while 40% favor postponement.”
